✔️ Doxycycline is effective against infections caused by:

• Haemophilus influenzae and H. ducreyi
• Actinomyces, Brucella, and Vibrio cholerae
• Nocardia, Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, and Rickettsiae
• Spirochetes such as Borrelia recurrentis, Treponema pallidum, and Treponema pertenue
• Plasmodium falciparum

✔️ Dosage

• General dosage: 200 mg on the first day, followed by 100 mg daily for 7–10 days.
• Severe infections (e.g., resistant urinary tract infections): 200 mg daily for 10 days.
• Acne: 100 mg daily.
• Uncomplicated genital chlamydia and non-gonococcal urethritis: 100 mg twice daily for 7–21 days (14–21 days for pelvic inflammatory disease).
• Always follow the advice of a registered physician.

• Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
• Skin rashes.
• Hemolytic anemia and eosinophilia.

✔️ Administration

Capsules should be swallowed whole with a sufficient amount of fluid during meals, preferably while sitting or standing.

✔️ Drug Interactions

• The absorption of tetracyclines may be reduced by antacids containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium, as well as iron-containing preparations.
• Bismuth salicylate also reduces the absorption of tetracyclines.
• Barbiturates, carbamazepine, and phenytoin decrease the half-life of doxycycline.
• Concurrent use of tetracyclines may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.
• Patients on anticoagulant therapy may require a lower dosage of anticoagulants.
• Tetracyclines should not be used alongside penicillin.

✔️ Doxycycline is contraindicated in:

• Patients with a known hypersensitivity to tetracyclines.
• Children under 8 years of age.
• Pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers.

✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation

• Doxycycline is not recommended for pregnant women due to the risk of permanent tooth discoloration and its effects on fetal bone development.
• Doxycycline passes into breast milk, so breastfeeding mothers should avoid using it.

• Using tetracyclines during tooth development (the second half of pregnancy, infancy, or childhood up to 8 years) can cause permanent tooth discoloration.
