How Fluclox 500 works

Fluclox 500 is an antibiotic. It kills bacteria by preventing them from forming their own protective covering (cell wall) which is needed for them to survive.

What if you forget to take Fluclox 500?

If you miss a dose of Fluclox 500, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

• Avoid intake of alcoholic beverages with Fluclox 500 Capsule 4's as it can make you dehydrated and affect your sleep. This can make it harder for your body to aid Fluclox 500 Capsule 4's in fighting infections.
• Make sure you drink plenty of water or other fluids every day while taking Fluclox 500

Indications of Fluclox 500

Fluclox 500mg Capsule contains 'Flucloxacillin sodium' that works by preventing the cell wall formation of the bacteria which is necessary for their survival. Thereby, Fluclox 500mg Capsule kills the bacteria and effectively treats various bacterial infections.

Pharmacology

Flucloxacillin is effective against gram-positive bacteria, including types that produce penicillinase. Gram-negative bacilli are not actively attacked by it. Flucloxacillin works by preventing bacteria's cell walls from forming. Flucloxacillin is an isoxazolyl penicillin that combines the qualities of action against gram-positive bacteria, stomach acid stability, and resistance to hydrolysis by penicillinase. A bactericidal antibiotic called flucloxacillin is very effective against staphylococci that make penicillinase. Flucloxacillin destroys bacterial cell walls, which prevents the production of peptidoglycan. The heteropolymeric structure known as peptidoglycan gives the cell wall its mechanical stability. The completion of the cross-linking with the terminal glycine residue of the pentaglycin bridge attaching to the fourth residue of the pentapeptide marks the end of the peptidoglycan production process. (D-alanine). Flucloxacillin inhibits the transpeptidase enzyme, which accomplishes this step. The outcome is a weakening of the bacterial cell wall, swelling, and eventual rupture of the cell. Due to steric hindrance caused by the acyl side chain, which hinders the opening of the - lactam ring, flucloxacillin resists the action of bacterial penicillinase.

Dosage of Fluclox 500

Oral administration:

Adult: 

• 250 mg four times daily. Dosage may be doubled in severe infections. In osteomyelitis and endocarditis, up to 8 gm daily is used in 6-8 hourly divided doses.

Children (2-10 years):

• 1/2 of the adult dose.

Children (Under 2 years): 

• 1/4 of the adult dose.

Renal Dose

• Renal impairment: CrCl (ml/min) <10 Dosage adjustment may be necessary.

Administration of Fluclox 500

• Oral doses should be administered 1 hour before a meal.

Interaction

Concurrent use of Flucloxacillin and may result in increased levels of Flucloxacillin in the blood for prolonged periods.

Contraindications

Flucloxacillin is contraindicated in penicillin-hypersensitive patients.

Pregnancy & Lactation

US FDA Pregnancy Category of Flucloxacillin is B. There are, no adequate and well-controlled studies on pregnant women. Because animal reproduction studies are not always predictive of human response, this drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Flucloxacillin has been shown to be excreted in human milk. So, caution should be exercised when Flucloxacillin is administered to a lactating mother.

Precautions & Warnings

Flucloxacillin should be used with caution in patients with evidence of hepatic dysfunction. Caution should also be exercised in the treatment of patients with an allergic diathesis.
