Indication of Xalcort 24mg Tablet

Xalcort 24 is a member of the class of drugs known as steroids. It is used to treat a wide range of illnesses and conditions, including cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, allergic conditions, asthma, and skin and eye disorders. Inhibiting the release of substances that cause swelling or alter immune system function are two ways that Xalcort 24 works.

Pharmacology

Deflazacort, an anti-inflammatory drug, inhibits phospholipase A2, the enzyme in charge of prostaglandin synthesis. Deflazacort also prevents the release of some chemicals that are essential to the immune system. Deflazacort inhibits the release of these chemicals, thereby suppressing the immune system.

Dosage & Administration of Xalcort 24mg Tablet

Adults-

  • For acute disorders, Deflazacort up to 120 mg/day may need to be administered initially. The majority of the time, maintenance doses fall between 3 and 18 mg per day.
  • For rheumatoid arthritis, the maintenance dose typically ranges from 3 to 18 mg per day. Use the smallest effective dose and increase it if required.
  • Bronchial asthma: Depending on the severity, high doses of 48–72 mg/day may be required to treat an acute attack. Once the attack has been subdued, the dose can be gradually reduced. The lowest dose that effectively manages symptoms should be used for maintenance in patients with chronic asthma.
  • Other conditions: The dose of Deflazacort is titrated to the lowest effective dose for maintenance based on clinical need. Starting doses can be calculated using a 5 mg/6 mg ratio of prednisone or prednisolone.

Children:

Children have only been minimally exposed to Deflazacort in clinical trials. The indications for glucocorticoids in children are the same as in adults, but it's crucial to use the lowest effective dosage. It might be appropriate to administer on alternate days. Deflazacort dosages typically range from 0.25 to 1.5 mg/kg/day.
The following ranges provide general guidance:

  • Chronic juvenile arthritides: The typical maintenance dose ranges from 0.25 to 1.0 mg/kg/day.
  • Nephrotic syndrome: The initial dose is typically 1.5 mg/kg/day, then it is titrated down based on clinical need.
  • Bronchial asthma: The initial dose should range from 0.25 to 1.0 mg/kg given on alternate days based on the potency ratio.
  • Withdrawal from deflazacort should not be abrupt in patients who have taken higher than physiological doses of systemic corticosteroids (roughly 9 mg daily or equivalent) for longer than 3 weeks. Whether the disease is likely to relapse as the dose of systemic corticosteroids is reduced will have a major impact on how the dose reduction should be carried out.
Interaction

The liver is where Deflazacort is broken down. If you're taking Deflazacort with other drugs that cause liver enzyme induction, such as rifampicin, rifabutin, carbamazepine, phenobarbitone, phenytoin, primidone, or aminoglutethimide, you should up your maintenance dose. It may be possible to reduce the maintenance dose of Deflazacort when taking drugs that inhibit liver enzymes (e.g. ketoconazole).

Contraindications

Intolerance to one or more of the ingredients. Patients who are being immunized with a live virus.

Pregnancy & Lactation

The placenta is crossed by Deflazacort. The risk of intrauterine development obstruction may, however, increase if corticosteroids are used for prolonged periods or more than once during pregnancy. As with all medications, corticosteroids must be recommended when the advantages to the mother and child outweigh the risks.

Nursing Mother:

Despite the fact that there is no information available for Deflazacort, corticosteroids are excreted in the breast drain. It is unlikely that Deflazacort dosages of up to 50 mg per day will have an adverse effect on the newborn child's system. There may be some adrenal concealment in newborns whose mothers took higher measurements than these, but the advantages of breastfeeding are probably greater than any potential risk.
